A few days ago I released an article entitled “An Update On Iodine and Thyroid Health”. In this article I discussed my personal experience with iodine, along with my patient’s experience. I also mentioned some of the benefits and risks of supplementing with iodine, and I spoke about the different forms of iodine supplementation.
But I decided to put together this blog post because I’m hoping that at least a few people will share their experience with iodine supplementation. So if you have Graves’ Disease, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, multinodular goiter, etc., and if you have supplemented with iodine in the past (or are currently supplementing with iodine), please feel free to share your experience in the comments section below. If you took iodine and had a negative reaction please let me know! And if you took iodine and had a positive experience please let me know! And even if you didn’t notice anything positive or negative please let me know!
Also, please feel free to be as specific as you can with regards to what type of iodine you took (i.e. Iodoral, Nascent, kelp, etc.), how much you took, etc. If you had a negative experience, what symptoms or lab values got worse? If you had a positive experience what symptoms or lab values improved? Thank you in advance for sharing your experience with iodine.

Hello all
Im a 35 year old female. Both my mother and brother are hypo.
I slowly started to experience hypo symptoms, over approx 2 years. It then peaked. I was in a mess. My TSH was classed as normal, but i had elevated antibodies. I couldn’t get help from anywhere. Because on paper…..all was ok.
I had horrendous fatigue. No energy. Thinning hair. Weight gain. And worst of all, constant anxiety – which ive never suffered with. It was constant.
After doing some research, with the help of my husband who is a raw vegan, i tried Iodoral 12.5mg. I started with 1 tablet a day. In just over a week, i was in tears…..i was feeling better….and it was such a relief!
I then went on to 2 tablets a day. This kept me fit and well and full if energy for a year.
But then my blood tests came back.
TSH – 100
Free T3 – 2.33
Free Thyroxine – 3.380
Thyroglobulin Antibodies- 700
TPA – 6.66
I came off the iodoral, and im now 2 weeks into taking 50mg levothyroxine. Im very tired. Had flakey skin. Hives. But other than that….im ok.
Im not sure what affects iodoral had….all i know is, it kept me on my feet, until my bloods were bad enough for the doctors to allow me treatment.
I have my first blood checks since being on levothyroxine in about 6 weeks.
I have been on levothyroxine for 2 weeks.
Been off iodoral for 3 weeks.
Im just so glad the anxiety/adrenaline hasnt returned.
